CPSC Paperless Pilot Program
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has approved a pilot program to start going paperless. This electronic program will require importers to submit information electronically regarding consumer products being brought into the United States. This electronic system is an advancement from the current paper-based method used for documentation of imported goods. Ideally, this pilot program will help the CPSC to more closely and accurately monitor goods that are imported. In addition, it well help in the identification of noncompliant goods before they are distributed.
The new electronic system will require and categorize five pieces of information from importers:
- Identification of the product
- Safety rules under which the product has been certified
- Name and location of the manufacturer
- Names of parties who certified the product with applicable regulations
- Indication that a required certificate presently exists for the product
This pilot program was approved by a 4-1 vote of the CPSC commissioners, and is expected to begin no earlier than July 2016. Participation in the program will be on an opt-in basis by interested importers, and many potential benefits stand to exist for collaborating with the CPSC on this effort.
